Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnotherapy for Depression
Can hypnotherapy help with depression?
Hypnotherapy can be used as a complementary approach to support people experiencing depression. It isn’t about telling you to cheer up, think positively or simply forget about how you’re feeling.
Instead, our work can focus on some of the thoughts, beliefs, emotional responses and patterns that may be contributing to you feeling stuck.
For example, we may work with confidence, self-esteem, motivation, negative thinking, difficult past experiences or the way you see yourself and your future.
Everyone experiences depression differently, which is why I tailor our sessions to you, rather than following exactly the same approach with everyone.
Hypnotherapy isn’t a replacement for appropriate medical or psychological care, but it can form part of the support you use to help yourself move forward.
Can I have hypnotherapy if I’m taking antidepressants?
You should continue taking any medication exactly as prescribed and discuss any concerns or changes with your doctor or prescribing healthcare professional.
I would never advise you to stop or change prescribed medication.
Hypnotherapy can instead be used alongside the healthcare and support you’re already receiving.
What if I don’t know why I’m depressed?
You don’t have to know.
Some people can identify a particular experience, loss, relationship, period of stress or change that seemed to trigger the way they feel. For others, depression seems to have developed gradually, and they can’t point to one particular reason.
You don’t need to arrive at your first appointment with everything figured out.
We’ll start with what’s happening for you now, how it’s affecting your life and how you would like things to be different.
What if I don’t feel motivated enough to change?
That’s okay too.
A lack of motivation can be part of experiencing depression, so I’m certainly not expecting you to arrive feeling enthusiastic, positive and ready to conquer the world!
Sometimes the first change is simply deciding to make an appointment.
We can start from wherever you are and work towards small, achievable changes rather than expecting everything to suddenly feel different overnight.
You don’t have to feel motivated before you begin.
How many hypnotherapy sessions will I need for depression?
There isn’t a set number because every person and situation is different.
Some people begin noticing changes relatively quickly, while others benefit from working together for longer, particularly when they’ve been struggling for a long time or there are several things contributing to how they feel.
We’ll discuss what you would like to achieve and review how things are changing as we go.
My aim isn’t to keep you coming to therapy indefinitely. It’s to help you make meaningful changes and reach a point where you feel able to move forward without needing me.
Will I lose control during hypnosis?
No. You remain in control throughout hypnosis.
You’ll normally still be able to hear my voice, know where you are and remember the session afterwards. If you wanted to move, speak or open your eyes, you could.
Hypnosis isn’t mind control and I can’t make you say or do anything against your wishes.
Many people are actually surprised by how normal and comfortable the experience feels.
What if I can’t relax or I’m not good at hypnosis?
There’s no such thing as being “good” at hypnosis.
You don’t have to completely clear your mind, stop thinking or achieve some special state. Having thoughts while you’re in hypnosis doesn’t mean it isn’t working.
I’ll guide you through the process, and you can simply experience it in whatever way feels natural for you.
There is nothing to get right and no test to pass.
Can I have hypnotherapy for depression online?
Yes. I also offer online hypnotherapy sessions, which means you can work with me from your own home.
For some people experiencing depression, this can make getting support more accessible, particularly when travelling or getting out of the house feels difficult.
You’ll simply need somewhere private and comfortable where you won’t be disturbed, along with a reliable internet connection.
