Hypnotherapy for Bad Habits

Break Unwanted Habits and Feel Back in Control

Do you have a habit you keep telling yourself you’ll stop, only to find yourself doing it again without even thinking?

Perhaps you bite your nails, pick at your skin, pull at your hair, suck your thumb, or have another repetitive habit that has become difficult to control.

You may have tried willpower. You may have told yourself, “I’m not doing that anymore.” And perhaps it works for a while — until you find yourself doing it again automatically.

That’s because many habits aren’t simply conscious choices. Over time, they can become automatic patterns, sometimes linked to stress, boredom, comfort, anxiety or simply repetition.

Hypnotherapy for bad habits can help you change those automatic patterns, understand what may be driving the behaviour and develop a calmer, healthier response instead.

Why Is It So Hard to Just Stop?

If stopping were simply a matter of deciding not to do something, you probably would have stopped already.

The conscious part of you may genuinely want to change. Yet another part seems to carry on with the behaviour before you’ve even realised you’re doing it.

You might notice yourself biting your nails while watching television. Perhaps you pick your skin when you’re concentrating or feeling stressed. You may pull at your hair without consciously deciding to do it.

The behaviour has become automatic.

Hypnotherapy works with these subconscious patterns. Rather than relying on willpower alone, we can begin changing the association between the habit and whatever has been triggering or maintaining it.

Habits Hypnotherapy May Help With

People come to me with all sorts of unwanted habits, including:

  • Nail biting
  • Skin picking
  • Hair pulling
  • Thumb sucking
  • Lip or cheek biting
  • Picking or scratching
  • Repetitive touching or fiddling
  • Other unwanted automatic habits

And sometimes, the habit itself isn’t really the problem.

It may have started as a way of dealing with stress, anxiety, boredom, frustration or a need for comfort. If that’s the case, simply trying to remove the behaviour may not be enough.

We can work with the reason behind it too.

You Don’t Have to Fight With Yourself

Most unwanted habits began for a reason.

At some point, your mind may have discovered that a particular behaviour provided comfort, distraction, stimulation or relief. Repeat something often enough and your brain becomes very good at doing it automatically.

But something that may once have served a purpose doesn’t have to stay with you forever.

Through hypnotherapy, we can help your mind learn that there are other ways to respond now.

You can begin noticing the old trigger without automatically following it with the old behaviour.

And that is where change can begin.

How Can Hypnotherapy Help With Bad Habits?

Hypnotherapy can help us work with the part of your mind responsible for automatic behaviours and learned patterns.

When you’re deeply relaxed, we can begin to challenge the old habit and introduce new ways of responding. Rather than constantly having to remind yourself not to do something, the aim is for the new response to begin feeling more natural and automatic.

We may use visualisation, positive suggestion and other techniques to help you imagine situations where you would normally carry out the habit — but this time responding differently.

For example, you might imagine noticing the urge to bite your nails and simply leaving your hands alone. You might see yourself coping with stress without picking your skin, or becoming aware of an old behaviour and choosing something different.

The more your mind rehearses the new response, the more familiar that response can become.

Finding the Reason Behind the Habit

Sometimes a habit is simply a habit.

However, sometimes there is something underneath it.

Perhaps it increases when you’re stressed. Maybe you do it when you’re anxious, concentrating, bored or tired. For some people, the behaviour provides a feeling of comfort or release.

During our sessions, we can explore what seems to trigger your habit and work on that too.

Rather than simply saying “stop doing this”, I want to help your mind find a better way of meeting whatever need that old behaviour may have been fulfilling.

What Happens During a Hypnotherapy Session for Bad Habits?

We’ll start by talking about the habit, when you notice it happening and anything that seems to make it better or worse.

There’s no judgement and nothing to be embarrassed about. I’ve worked with people on all sorts of issues over the years.

We’ll then use hypnotherapy tailored specifically to you. I don’t believe one script fits everybody, because two people can have exactly the same habit for completely different reasons.

You remain aware and in control throughout hypnosis. You’re not asleep, and I can’t make you do anything you don’t want to do.

Instead, hypnosis allows you to become deeply relaxed and focused while we work with the thoughts, feelings and automatic patterns connected with the habit.

Imagine Not Having to Think About It Anymore

Imagine looking at your hands and realising you haven’t bitten your nails.

Or suddenly noticing that you’ve been watching television for an hour and haven’t picked your skin once.

Perhaps someone else notices the change before you do.

And instead of constantly trying to stop yourself, the old behaviour simply begins to feel less important.

That’s what we’re working towards — not spending every waking moment fighting an urge, but reaching the point where the old habit no longer has the same hold over you.

Is Hypnotherapy for Bad Habits Right for You?

You don’t have to have tried everything else first.

You also don’t need to know exactly why you have the habit.

If there’s a part of you thinking, “I really want to stop this, but I just keep doing it,” that’s enough for us to start a conversation.

Your habit may have been with you for months, years or even since childhood. That doesn’t mean it has to stay with you forever.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnotherapy for Bad Habits

Can hypnotherapy make me stop a habit?

Hypnotherapy isn’t about forcing you to do something against your will. It works best when you genuinely want to change. We use hypnosis to help change the thoughts, associations and automatic responses connected with the habit.

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is different. Some habits may respond relatively quickly, while others have deeper emotional or stress-related triggers that we need to work with. We’ll discuss this during your initial consultation.

What if I don’t know why I do it?

That’s absolutely fine. Many people don’t. We can explore when and where the habit happens and look for patterns without you needing to arrive with all the answers.

Can you help if I’ve had the habit for years?

Yes. A behaviour being well established doesn’t automatically mean it can’t change. It simply means your mind has had plenty of practice doing it one way — and now we can begin practising something different.

Can sessions be done online?

Yes. Hypnotherapy sessions can be carried out face-to-face in Leicestershire or online, depending on what works best for you.

Ready to Leave That Old Habit Behind?

You may have spent years telling yourself:

“I really need to stop doing this.”

Perhaps now it’s time to try something different.

Your free initial consultation gives us the opportunity to talk about your habit, when it happens, what you’d like to change and whether hypnotherapy may be suitable for you.
