Hypnotherapy for Sleep & Insomnia

When Your Body Is Tired but Your Mind Won’t Switch Off

You’re exhausted.

You’ve been looking forward to getting into bed all evening.

Then your head touches the pillow…

and suddenly your brain decides it’s time to think about absolutely everything.

Tomorrow’s jobs.

Something somebody said earlier.

A conversation from three years ago.

Whether you’ve remembered to do something.

What time you need to get up.

And then comes the thought that makes everything worse:

“I need to go to sleep.”

You check the clock.

11:48.

Then 12:37.

Then 1:26.

And every time you look, you calculate how many hours you’ve got left before morning.

“If I fall asleep now, I’ll still get five hours…”

Before long, you’re not simply struggling to sleep.

You’re worrying about struggling to sleep.

Hypnotherapy for sleep and insomnia can help you work with some of the thoughts, tension and learned patterns that may be making it difficult to switch off and allow sleep to happen naturally.

Has Sleep Become Something You’re Trying to Do?

Sleep is strange because the harder you try to make it happen, the more elusive it can sometimes become.

You may have developed an entire bedtime routine around trying to force yourself to sleep.

Perhaps you go to bed ridiculously early because you’re worried you won’t get enough hours.

You watch the clock.

You calculate how much sleep you’re getting.

You become frustrated when you’re still awake.

You might even start worrying about bedtime hours before you actually go to bed.

Eventually, your brain can begin associating:

bed = trying to sleep = worrying about not sleeping

rather than:

bed = rest = switching off = sleep

Part of our work can involve helping to change that relationship.

Sleep Problems Can Look Different for Everyone

For some people, the problem is falling asleep.

For others, falling asleep isn’t difficult at all — but they wake during the night and can’t settle again.

Perhaps you:

  • Lie awake for a long time before falling asleep
  • Wake repeatedly throughout the night
  • Wake at 3am or 4am with your mind immediately switching on
  • Wake much earlier than you need to
  • Feel tired all day but strangely alert at bedtime
  • Constantly check the clock
  • Worry about how you’ll cope tomorrow
  • Sleep better when you don’t have anything important the following day
  • Find your mind replaying conversations or planning tomorrow
  • Feel as though you’ve forgotten how to sleep naturally

Sometimes people become so focused on getting eight hours that sleep starts feeling like another task they need to succeed at.

But sleep isn’t a performance.

You don’t have to pass a test before morning.

How Can Hypnotherapy Help With Sleep?

Hypnotherapy can help you develop a calmer relationship with bedtime and work with some of the patterns that may be keeping your mind alert when you want to rest.

Depending on what’s happening for you, our sessions might focus on:

✓ Learning to physically relax
✓ Reducing bedtime overthinking
✓ Letting thoughts pass without following them
✓ Reducing clock-watching
✓ Breaking the fear of “not getting enough sleep”
✓ Creating calmer bedtime associations
✓ Reducing anticipatory anxiety about bedtime
✓ Helping you feel more comfortable waking during the night
✓ Mentally rehearsing settling back to sleep
✓ Building confidence in your body’s natural ability to rest

One of the biggest changes may simply be moving away from:

“I HAVE to sleep.”

towards:

“I can rest… and allow sleep to come when it’s ready.”

That takes some of the pressure away.

And sometimes, taking away the pressure is exactly what your mind has been waiting for.

Waking Up in the Middle of the Night

Perhaps falling asleep isn’t actually your problem.

You drift off quite easily, but then suddenly you’re awake.

You look at the clock.

2:17am.

And almost immediately your brain switches on.

You start thinking about tomorrow, work, family, something you need to remember or something that happened yesterday.

Then comes the calculation…

“I’ve only got four hours and 43 minutes left.”

And now you’re wide awake.

The more you try to force yourself back to sleep, the more frustrated you become.

Sometimes one of the most helpful things we can work on is taking away that fear of being awake.

Waking briefly during the night doesn’t have to mean the rest of the night is ruined. Instead of immediately thinking “Oh no, here we go again,” we can work towards your mind responding differently:

“It’s okay. I can just rest. Sleep will come when it comes.”

That change may sound small, but it can take away a lot of the pressure you’ve unknowingly attached to sleep.

The Fear of How You’ll Feel Tomorrow

Sometimes the biggest problem isn’t actually tonight.

It’s tomorrow.

“How am I going to cope at work?”

“I’ve got an important meeting.”

“I have to drive tomorrow.”

“I’ll be exhausted.”

“I won’t be able to function.”

Before you know it, you’re lying in bed mentally living through a terrible tomorrow that hasn’t even happened yet.

Hypnotherapy can help you work with that anticipatory anxiety and stop treating every difficult night’s sleep as a catastrophe.

You may have had tired days before.

And you got through them.

Taking away some of the fear of tomorrow can make it easier to stop fighting with tonight.

Learning to Trust Sleep Again

You were born knowing how to sleep.

You didn’t lie in your cot thinking:

“Right, I really need eight hours tonight.” 😂

Sleep simply happened.

Over time, stress, anxiety, life events, routines or a period of poor sleep can sometimes change your relationship with bedtime.

The aim isn’t to make you sleep.

It’s to help create the conditions where your mind and body can begin to feel safe enough to stop trying so hard.

We can use hypnosis, relaxation, imagery and other techniques to help you practise letting go, quietening the mental chatter and becoming more comfortable with simply resting.

Because sometimes the less you chase sleep…

the easier it becomes to allow it.

What Happens During Hypnotherapy for Sleep & Insomnia?

We’ll start by talking about what’s actually happening with your sleep.

I may ask about when your sleep difficulties began, what happens when you go to bed, whether you struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep, and what goes through your mind when you find yourself awake.

We’ll also look at what may be contributing to the problem.

Perhaps your mind won’t switch off.

Maybe you’re worrying about tomorrow.

You might have become very aware of the clock, developed anxiety around bedtime or simply reached the point where you expect not to sleep.

Sometimes people tell me:

“I’m absolutely exhausted… until I get into bed.”

And that’s useful information.

Hypnosis Is About Helping You Let Go — Not Making You Sleep

During hypnosis, I’ll guide you into a deeply relaxed and focused state.

You don’t have to fall asleep during the session. In fact, sleep isn’t the goal of the hypnosis itself.

Instead, we can use that relaxed state to work with some of the thoughts, feelings and automatic patterns that have become associated with bedtime.

Depending on what’s happening for you, I may use relaxation, imagery, positive suggestion and mental rehearsal to help you:

  • Let go of physical tension
  • Quiet the mental chatter
  • Stop putting so much pressure on yourself to sleep
  • Feel calmer about going to bed
  • Respond differently if you wake during the night
  • Reduce clock-watching and calculating
  • Let thoughts come and go without needing to follow them
  • Begin associating your bed with rest rather than frustration
  • Feel more confident in your natural ability to sleep

Your Hypnotherapy Is Tailored to You

There isn’t one generic sleep script that I use for everybody.

Someone whose mind races with work worries at bedtime may need something very different from somebody who falls asleep easily but wakes at 3am every night.

That’s why I want to understand your particular pattern.

We can then tailor the hypnosis around what you need, while helping your mind begin rehearsing a different experience of bedtime.

Imagine getting into bed without immediately wondering:

“Am I going to sleep tonight?”

Imagine waking during the night, turning over comfortably and not even bothering to look at the clock.

Or noticing a thought entering your mind and simply allowing it to drift away because it doesn’t need your attention at 3am.

Over time, bedtime can begin to feel less like something you have to manage…

and more like something you can simply allow.

Hypnotherapy for Insomnia

Can Hypnotherapy Help With Insomnia?

Hypnotherapy may help when sleep difficulties are connected to things such as stress, anxiety, overthinking, bedtime worry or unhelpful patterns that have developed around sleep.

Sometimes, after experiencing poor sleep for a while, people begin expecting another bad night before they’ve even gone to bed.

You might catch yourself thinking:

“I know I’m not going to sleep tonight.”

And when your mind starts expecting bedtime to be difficult, that expectation itself can create more tension and alertness.

Hypnotherapy can help us work with those thoughts and associations, helping you develop a calmer response to bedtime and become less focused on whether sleep is happening quickly enough.

It isn’t about forcing your mind to switch off.

Instead, we’re helping you become better at letting go of the need to control sleep.

Sometimes There May Be Another Reason for Poor Sleep

Not every sleep problem is caused by stress or overthinking.

Sleep can also be affected by medication, pain, hormonal changes, lifestyle factors or medical sleep conditions.

If your sleep problems are persistent, unexplained, suddenly become significantly worse, or you have symptoms such as loud snoring, gasping or stopping breathing during sleep, I would encourage you to speak with your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional.

Hypnotherapy can be a valuable complementary approach when appropriate, but we don’t want to assume that every sleep difficulty is psychological.

And if you’ve already had things medically checked and find yourself saying:

“There’s nothing physically stopping me sleeping — my brain just won’t let me!”

…then that’s something we can certainly talk about. ❤️

Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnotherapy for Sleep & Insomnia

Can hypnotherapy help if I’ve had insomnia for years?

It may still be helpful even if your sleep difficulties have been around for a long time.

Sometimes the longer someone struggles with sleep, the more habits and expectations develop around it. You may have spent years expecting bedtime to be difficult, watching the clock or worrying about how much sleep you’re going to get.

We can work with those patterns rather than assuming that because you’ve slept badly for years, you always will.

What if I can’t switch my brain off at night?

This is something I hear a lot.

Your body may be exhausted while your mind seems determined to analyse, plan, remember and solve absolutely everything the moment you get into bed.

The aim isn’t necessarily to make your mind completely blank.

Instead, we can work on helping you notice thoughts without becoming involved in every single one of them.

You can have a thought without needing to follow it.

Tomorrow’s problems can wait until tomorrow.

Can hypnotherapy help if I wake during the night?

If waking during the night has become associated with frustration, clock-watching and worrying, hypnotherapy may help you develop a calmer response.

Instead of waking and immediately thinking:

“Oh no. I’m awake again.”

we can work towards:

“That’s okay. I can rest.”

Taking away some of the panic and pressure around being awake may make it easier to settle again.

What if I fall asleep during the hypnotherapy session?

Don’t worry if you become extremely relaxed.

However, the aim of our session isn’t simply to make you fall asleep in my therapy room! 😂

We’re using hypnosis to work with the thoughts, feelings and patterns surrounding your sleep so that you can take those changes home with you.

Will you give me a hypnosis recording to listen to at home?

Yes. I provide all of my clients with a hypnosis recording to listen to between sessions.

For sleep difficulties, listening to your recording at bedtime can give you an opportunity to practise relaxing, letting go of the day and allowing your mind to become quieter as you prepare for sleep.

It also means the work doesn’t simply stop when you leave the therapy room. You can continue reinforcing what we’re working on between your sessions, in the comfort of your own home.

Please only listen to your hypnosis recording when you’re somewhere safe to relax completely — never while driving or doing anything that requires your full attention.

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is different, and it depends on what’s contributing to your sleep difficulties and how long they’ve been happening.

We’ll discuss what’s appropriate for you and review how things are progressing as we work together.

Can I have sleep hypnotherapy online?

Yes. I offer sessions face-to-face in Leicestershire and online, where online hypnotherapy is appropriate for you.
