Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnotherapy for Fears & Phobias
Can hypnotherapy help with fears and phobias?
Hypnotherapy can help us work with the thoughts, associations and automatic responses connected to a fear or phobia.
You may consciously know that something is unlikely to harm you, yet your body still responds with fear. Our work can focus on helping you develop a calmer response and feel more confident dealing with situations you’ve previously avoided.
The aim isn’t necessarily to make you love whatever you’re frightened of.
It’s to help the fear have less control over you.
What if I’ve had my phobia for years?
The fact that you’ve experienced a fear for a long time doesn’t automatically mean it can’t change.
Sometimes people have spent years adapting their lives around a phobia — avoiding certain places, situations or experiences because it feels easier than confronting the fear.
Over time, that avoidance can reinforce the belief that the situation really is dangerous.
Hypnotherapy can help us begin challenging that old response and creating a different one.
Something you’ve learned to fear may not have to remain frightening forever.
What if I don’t know where my phobia came from?
That’s absolutely fine.
Some people can remember exactly when their fear began. Others have no idea.
We don’t necessarily need to discover an original event in order to work with what’s happening now.
I’ll be much more interested in understanding how the fear affects you today, what situations trigger it and what you’d like to be able to do differently.
Will I have to face the thing I’m frightened of during hypnotherapy?
Not necessarily.
I’m not going to unexpectedly produce a spider, put you on an aeroplane or take you to the top of a building! 😂
Much of our work can initially happen through hypnosis, imagination and mental rehearsal, allowing you to practise responding differently in a safe and controlled way.
Depending on the particular fear, gradual real-world experiences may sometimes be useful, but anything we discuss would be planned appropriately rather than sprung upon you.
Can hypnotherapy help with fear of flying?
Fear of flying is a common reason people seek help with a phobia.
You may worry about turbulence, feeling trapped, losing control, having a panic attack or simply being unable to get off the aircraft.
Hypnotherapy can help us work with anticipatory anxiety as well as your response to the different stages of flying.
We can mentally rehearse travelling to the airport, checking in, boarding, taking your seat and responding more calmly to the normal sensations and sounds of a flight.
Can hypnotherapy help with fear of the dentist?
Yes, dental fear is another area we can work with.
For some people, the fear is connected to a previous experience. For others, it may involve needles, pain, loss of control, particular sounds or simply being in the dental chair.
Our sessions can focus on the aspects that are relevant to your particular fear, helping you feel calmer and more in control when attending appointments.
Can hypnotherapy help with emetophobia or fear of being sick?
Hypnotherapy may be used as part of an approach to help with the thoughts and anxiety associated with a fear of vomiting.
Emetophobia can sometimes affect far more than simply being frightened of being sick. It may influence eating, travelling, socialising or being around people who are unwell.
Because severe emetophobia can overlap with other difficulties and may significantly affect eating or everyday functioning, we’ll discuss your individual circumstances first and whether my approach is appropriate for you.
What is the Rewind Technique and can it help with a phobia?
The Rewind Technique is one approach I may consider when a fear is associated with a particular frightening or traumatic experience.
It uses a structured process designed to help create distance from the memory and change the automatic response associated with it.
One advantage for some people is that you may not need to tell me every detail of what happened.
Not every phobia requires Rewind, and we’ll decide together whether it’s appropriate for you.
